Teen Named Homecoming Queen Two Years After Being Shot

A Utah teen who was shot by two of her classmates in February 2017 and left for dead has not only survived and recovered, she’s just been named homecoming queen. Deserae Turner was given her crown at Green Canyon High School in North Logan and it shows how far she’s come.

Since the shooting, the 17-year-old has endured 10 brain surgeries and has had to relearn how to do everything. Deserae hasn’t been able to return to school full-time yet, but she goes for three hours a day and takes online classes and is still expected to graduate on time.

“I was just a homecoming queen, there’s nothing special about that,” Deserae explains. “But if you think about what I’ve been through, yes — it’s very special. It is very awesome.”
