Here’s some hard truth about soft drinks – and the companies that make them.
1. The hottest new beverage is water. Water is one of the fastest-growing segments of the beverage industry, while sales for soda are on the decline.
2. We’re caffeine-dependent. The caffeine content of energy drinks is something the Food and Drug Administration is worried about. For example, one 16-ounce can of Monster Energy has around 160 milligrams of caffeine, compared to just 38 milligrams in a 12-ounce can of Pepsi.
3. The soda industry will prevent a soda tax. Public health officials have been fighting for new federal taxes on soda, but soda companies have so much money – and so many politicians in their pockets – that any new soda tax is unlikely to pass.
4. Doctors and dentists get money from soda companies. Doctors and dentists, who should be telling people to drink more water and less soda, are accepting money from soda companies. For example, in 2009, Coca-Cola paid $600,000 to the American Academy of Family Physicians to help create a website about healthy diets. (Yahoo Finance)
