Thousands of Elvis Presley fans are in Memphis today to mark the 36th anniversary of the death of The King of Rock and Roll. As usual, the emotional highlight of the week was the annual candlelight vigil at Graceland, where the faithful visited the Meditation Garden where Elvis is interred, along with his parents and his grandmother.
Expected to draw close to 60,000 fans, Elvis Week continues through Sunday, with other highlights being the launch of the Elvis at Stax box set and a screening of his 1973 TV special Aloha From Hawaii.
Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau president Kevin Kane tells WMC television, "During Elvis Week there are so many fans that come from all over the world, and so much media here everything Elvis from different parts of the word this is the right venue to get the word out about some of the things we'll be doing next year."
Presley is the centerpiece of Memphis' plans for 2014 to mark the 60th anniversary of rock and roll. His first Sun Records single "That's All Right" was recorded on July 5th, 1954.
