Zoey is a 4-year old pit mix who's been at the WPA Humane Society since July.. she'll be a part of the sleepover this weekend to spotlight the critters who have been at the shelter the longest..
Every year, shelters always wrestle with promoting adoption of pets at the Holidays, knowing that some people cannot resist the lure of giving a pet as a gift to someone who might not be prepared for the responsibilities of having a pet. At the same time, the shelters are full of animals that NEED responsible and loving owners.
At the Western Pa Humane Society (WPHS), several volunteers have come up with a unique promotion to highlight some of our long term animals. They will be spending the weekend of December 14th and 15th in the kennel run (including the night) with some of our long term animals, highlighting these fabulous dogs that have been overlooked at the shelter for whatever reason.
David Janusek, the Executive Director of the Western PA Humane Society, was so taken with this idea he has elected to join the 3 volunteers staying the weekend in the kennel. “There is a belief that there is a time limit on dogs, and that has not been the case for many years at the Western PA Humane Society. As an Open Door Shelter we struggle at times with space but no animal is ever euthanized for length of stay. We take our responsibility to the community very seriously and sometimes an aggressive dog or a ill dog will be euthanized but not a healthy, adoptable dog. Ever.”
The volunteers are Kim Lenz, Tammy Merjanian, Lisa Stefanowicz, and Executive Director David Janusek. They will enter the kennel runs on Saturday the 14th at 10am and leave on Sunday the 15th at 5pm.
Kim Lenz has picked Tasha, a 3 year old Pit Bull mix that has been at WPHS since July 5th. “I chose Tasha. Why? The first time I saw her in early July I was taken with her looks. Short, stalky, gorgeous, and happy. Those smiling eyes when she wags her tail did me in. As I got to know her and spend more and more time with her, I found her to be a loving, playful, and loyal girl. If I could adopt her, I would. My wish is that she finds her special person for Christmas,” says Ms. Lenz.
Tammy Merjanian picked Miss B, a 4 year old lab/pit bull mix that has been at WPHS since June. “To be honest I chose her not because she is a long timer but I realized I did not know her as well as I have others in the past or ones we have currently in the shelter. So I thought this would be the best opportunity to be able to get to know her on a one on one basis in hopes that if any potential adopter had a question about her I could help. Also I hear she LOVES belly rubs and well – I love giving them out. So I hope that through this, I am able to help her find that perfect home where she can get all of the belly rubs she wants and deserves.”
Lisa Stefanowicz picked picked Zoey because she is a great dog she doesn't get much attention because she sits in cage 9 and because she is a Pit Bull. Zoey throughout her entire stay with us has never lost her personality and her happy go lucky attitude. She is a little spitfire who loves to play and loves giving kisses. And she has just the cutest face with her floppy ears and smile. I just love her and know there is the right family out there for her and I want to be the one that helps find it.
David Janusek has chosen Kisser, a 4 year old Labrador Mix that has been at the shelter since the beginning of September. “He is a really nice dog! I cannot figure out why nobody has adopted him yet.”

It'll be a Happy Holiday Season if you adopt Noel as part of your family! 2 years old and very sociable!
The picture below shows a wonderful cat bed donated to us by a friend of Western PA Humane Society volunteer Amy Lewandowski. Her friend, Martha (Marty)Ressler is a fiber artist (as well as the proud owner of a Western PA Humane Society cat) and gave us 11 round cat mats for WPHS made from the recycled black yarn that framed the Knit The Bridge panels and covered the railings. She coiled them into cushy 'tuffets'. They are so different then the ordinary cat beds and they are a piece of Pittsburgh History. There are 10 lucky cats on the adoption floor currently that are proudly using these beds (one lucky kitty already went home with one!).
Anyone who adopts one of these special kitties over the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend will get to take home the bed for their new best friend. Here are 3 cats ready to head home with you! Mama, Noel, and Kiley.
